It was in the wall the whole time.

Demo day

Check the wall.

Thirty panels, one sledgehammer. Each panel takes two hits: the first cracks it, the second opens it. Behind most of them there is dust, a pipe, a wire or a mouse. Behind one there is a tin.

    Three steps.

    01

    Swing

Pick a panel and hit it. Cracks first, then a hole. Dust goes everywhere. That is normal.

    02

    Look

You will find dust, pink insulation, copper pipe, a mouse nest and a beer can from 1978. The tin is somewhere in there.

    03

    Settle up

Pay the repair bill, take the gold or put the board back, and print the change order.

    Found in walls

    It has happened.

None of these people were looking. They were laying a pipe, lifting a floor or knocking through a wall. Every story below links to the report it came from.

Workers laying a sewer pipe found about 50 gold bars in the cellar wall.

In Dendermonde, East Flanders, a house owned by the charity CAW was being renovated when workers found gold bricked into the cellar walls. Police photos showed around 50 bars. The haul was valued at about €9 million, or $10.4 million. It was inventoried and moved to a federal vault, and the legal owner was still unclear. Police asked treasure hunters to stay away.

Outlets differ on the exact count and value. These are the CBS figures.

Three workers opened a wall in a Brittany mansion and found a box of coins.

The box was in the wall. Days later a cloth pouch turned up above a wooden beam. Between them: 239 gold coins from the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV. They were sold at auction with an estimate of €250,000 to €300,000, and the proceeds were split half to the owners and half among the three finders.

Under the kitchen floor, a pot with about 260 gold coins.

A couple renovating their 18th-century home in Ellerby, North Yorkshire, lifted the floorboards and the concrete beneath and found a pot of gold coins dated 1610 to 1727. The coins were just under the age limit to count as treasure, so the couple kept them. They sold at Spink in London for £755,000, about $852,000.

He inherited a house in Normandy. The gold was everywhere in it.

In Évreux, a man inherited a house and started with a box of gold coins stuck under a piece of furniture. An auctioneer said the rest was under the furniture, under piles of linen, in the bathroom, everywhere. In all: 5,000 gold coins, two bars and 37 ingots, more than 200 pounds, worth about $3.7 million. He owed 45% inheritance tax on it.
